First Interview..... Of many we hope.
1: Your Name?
A: Victoria Vives
2: Your location ?
A: Los Angeles, California
3: Which Martial Art/s do you do?
A: I've studied many Martial Arts over the years ranging from classical styles like Kendo and Kiryu Kenpo, combat sports like Boxing and MMA, stage fighting and acrobatics, to reality based self defense arts like Jeet Kune Do and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
If had to classify myself as a Martial Artist, I would say that my main disciplines are Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee's martial art, and stage fighting/fight choreography. These two represent two ends of the spectrum in that JKD is centered around real application and personal development, whereas stage fighting and fight choreography are purely artistic expressions for the entertainment of others.
4: How long have you trained and what belt / rank are you now?
A: I started training in the Martial Arts six years ago. I've been in stage fighting from the beginning as it was important for me as an artist. I started with JKD three years ago and am currently studying for my Jeet Kune Do instructor certification. I'm ranked as an instructor apprentice. Neither of these disciplines use belt systems, which is the way I prefer it as I think people place too much value on things and not enough on the experience.
5: Why did you start?
A: I felt passion for it. I was especially inspired by action films!
If you think about it, who hasn't been inspired by Bruce Lee's amazing skills or by so many exciting fight scenes in action films? A good fight scene makes you want to get up in the middle of the movie and start kicking all over the place, doesn't it?
The mystery and power behind martial arts has always been intriguing to me, it really didn't take much for me to develop a passion for something so powerful and life changing. I believe everyone should practice martial arts. The energy, spiritual balance, confidence, strength, and overall health that martial arts promote is something that everyone can benefit from.
6: Do you prefer to use your hands, feet or other body part to strike?
A: For film I prefer to kick in the flashiest way. There's really nothing like defying gravity with acrobatics and mind blowing kicking combinations.
For the real deal, I let my fists do the talking. I might throw an elbow in for good measure.
7: Favorite technique?
A: That's a tough one, there are so many to choose from.
I really like the body slam. It's not exactly a Jeet Kune Do technique, but guys usually underestimate women and nothing makes a statement of power quite like a raw, brutal, body slam. Women can be powerful AND sexy and my body slams express both.
8: In your own opinion, what is your most dangerous weapon?
A: I think I would choose my eyes. I simply don't need physical weapons when my eyes can strike fear in the heart of men.
9: Have you ever had to use your art in self defence?
A: I've only fought on the streets once. I didn't know any martial arts back then. I beat up two girls who insisted on starting trouble. I couldn't see any other choices at the time other than hit or get hit. I saw my preferences clearly and acted on them. They lost.
After that incident, I realized how pointless it was.
Now, being a martial artist, I choose not to fight, unless it is sparring or some other development oriented activity. With martial arts you develop the calm and balance necessary to stay centered in those kinds of situations. I prefer to act as a positive guide and role model for others.
10: List any titles or competitions you have won.
A: I don't have an interest in competing. I only do what I'm passionate about and I prefer to express myself through art and enrichment so I've chosen not to compete and focus my energies on teaching through entertainment.
When I train, I train hard, and my sparring partners can attest to that. I prove myself in combat on a regular basis, but that's for me only and there's no need for me to compete on a public level.
For anyone interested in learning Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, I've put a powerful online training program together, You are invited you to join me! www.victoriavives.com
